Chief Pharmacist Palliative Care

Chief Pharmacist Palliative Care Galway Hospice Governed Services

Niall Manktelow is Research Manager and Chief II Pharmacist at Galway Hospice Governed Services, a specialist palliative care service that encompasses two inpatient units in Galway and Mayo and a palliative homecare service serving County Galway.

Niall graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2011 before completing his Masters of Pharmacy at RCSI in 2012. His interest in palliative care began during his time working as a Supervising Pharmacist in a Dublin community pharmacy and in 2017 he began working full time within the specialty, taking up two separate roles as Senior Pharmacist in Milford Care Centre and Galway Hospice. In 2021 he was appointed Chief II Pharmacist in the Galway Hospice Governed Services, a role which has allowed him to lead on many medication management initiatives on a local and national level. Since 2025 Niall also holds the post of Research Manager, leading on research strategy and vision within his organisation. He is passionate about the role of research in palliative care and the opportunity it represents to lead to enduring improvements in the quality of life of palliative patients. His own research interests include barriers to community medication access for palliative patients, deprescribing in adult palliative care, clinical implications of opioid rotation ratios, and the integration of the palliative care model into advanced heart failure service provision.
